Brahman registrations continue to riseThe American Brahman Breeders Association reported a 6 percent increase in registrations of American Brahman cattle for 2010, citing increased demand for Brahman genetics and renewed excitement for association programs. The association also attributes their growth to the added demand for Brahman cattle, especially in the F-1 market because of the breeds efficiency and environmental adaptability. "The industry has seen a need for increased heterosis and efficiency," says Shivers. "Brahman cattle are known as crossbreeding's common denominator and cattlemen recognize the value of these genetics in their breeding programs." As a preferred choice for genetics in the south, the states of Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi, and Oklahoma recorded the highest number of Brahman cattle registrations in 2010. The top 5 breeders by registration numbers were J.D. Hudgins. Inc., Hungerford, Texas; V8 Ranch, Hungerford, Texas; Byron Vassberg, College Station, Texas; Carlos Lee, Aguadulce, Panama; and Samual C. Duplantis, Erath, Louisiana. The continued increase of Brahman popularity contributed to the financial profitability of the ABBA, says Chris Shivers, executive vice president. "This is the fourth straight fiscal year that ABBA has profited over $100,000. The Brahman board of directors is committed to investing these profits into adding value to our members and increasing the promotion of American Brahman cattle throughout the southern United States," says Shivers. The association is adding a membership convention in 2011. The ABBA has made a continued vision to insuring the Brahman breed's place as a viable entity in the global beef market.
