4-H livestock judging team places at national meet

Goshen County's Senior 4-H Livestock Judging Team won first in the nation in beef judging and was seventh overall at the American Royal 4-H and FFA Livestock Judging Contest.

The competition was the last week of October in Kansas City, Mo. Teams from 10 states participated. Andrea Gurney, a junior at Southeast High School, finished sixth overall, and the team placed fourth in reasons.

Other members are Jessica Middleswarth and Danielle Schainost, sophomores at Southeast High School, and PD Miller, a freshman at Torrington High School.

The team is coached by Clint McWaters, who also coaches the Junior Livestock Judging Team.

4-Hers judged 10 classes of hogs, steers, lambs and goats. Competitors also gave multiple sets of oral reasons on the different classes supporting why they placed the classes the way they did.

Gurney placed fourth in reasons, and Miller was third in the beef classes.
