Lacewell receives Borlaug Lifetime Achievement Award

Texas

Ron Lacewell, Ph.D., head of federal relations for Texas A&M AgriLife, was named the Norman Borlaug Lifetime Achievement Award recipient at the Texas Plant Protection Association Conference held recently in Bryan.

The award is given to association members who have made special contributions to the association, the annual conference and to Texas agriculture. The award is named after the late Dr. Norman Borlaug, Nobel Peace Prize winner, known as the "Father of the Green Revolution" for developing high-yielding, disease-resistant wheat varieties. His research transformed agriculture in starvation-plagued Mexico, Asia, Africa and South America.

Lacewell leads a team to address initiatives, partnering and acting as liaison to federal agencies and to Congress. The Office of Federal Relations was established to support College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Texas AgriLife Research and Texas AgriLife Extension Service programs at the federal level.

Lacewell has been on the Texas Plant Protection Association board of directors for more than 10 years and has been responsible for securing many keynote speakers such as Borlaug, Texas Commissioner of Agriculture Todd Staples and American Farm Bureau President Bob Stallman. He also has served as the chairman of the awards committee for several years.

"Dr. Lacewell is aware of the topics that are important to Texas agriculture," said Bob Sasser, executive director of the Texas Plant Protection Association. "His leadership has assisted the association to continue to grow in size and in quality."
