Hop into Spring with your closest friends

I guess some kind of celebration is in order. It has been one year since 530 North Pecan in Pauls Valley, Okla., took on the name "Pecan Cottage" and became the setting for an unusual bed and breakfast. Since the first trio of best friends took a short road trip and made Pecan Cottage their lodging destination for three full days and two dreamy nights, this charming 1948 Craftsman-style, two-bedroom home blossomed into one of the High Plains' favorite overnight accommodations for chick trips.

Many people still ask, "What is a chick trip?" Well, simply put, it is when three or four gals decide to leave their everyday lives behind and take a few days for themselves to do what they want, when they want, without having to worry about family or work responsibilities.

Pecan Cottage B & B is just the place because it is fully equipped and very private. Whether it is a few friends who have a passion for scrapbooking, moms and grown daughters who want to spend some special time together, sisters from all over who meet for the weekend to catch up on their lives, or girlfriends who just need some time for themselves, the Cottage fills all those needs.

Not only are the pantry and refrigerator kept filled to overflowing with munchies, meals and beverages, Pauls Valley is centrally located and no matter what you like to do it is probably available in town or nearby. Wineries, casinos, history centers, lakes, golf, and incredible scenery are a few ideas; then add Pauls Valley's own chocolate factory, pie factory, and special shopping like "thegallery," a specialty store whose apropos slogan "not all art is framed" fits them to a tea.

As the colorful leaves fell to the ground in the fall of 2009, I decided to invest in this lovely cottage that sits on a shady corner lot in the middle of a pleasant neighborhood where the western view is farmland.

As with many homes in rural Oklahoma, the back door is the main entrance, and at the Cottage it opens into an immense kitchen and eating area with a vaulted cedar ceiling, double glass front hutches, and a center island.

The lot is covered with large pecan trees, mimosa, dogwood, and many flowering shrubs. The front porch, enclosed with windows facing west, north and south, is furnished with resort-like rattan furniture and makes for a lazy place to read and relax.
