Missouri

The Southwest Missouri Cattlemen's Association will meet at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 2 at the Joplin Regional Stockyards in Carthage to participate in an evaluation of the 113 steer calves that are entered in the Missouri Steer Feedout in Iowa.

The steers will have been weighed, tagged, graded and priced earlier in the afternoon by Rick Huffman, Missouri Department of Agriculture market reporter.

During the program each group of steers will be run through the ring. The audience will rank them and answer a variety of questions about their expected feedlot and carcass performance.

"Each person will be equipped with a remote control so they can record their answers to the multiple-choice questions on the computer," said Eldon Cole, livestock specialist with University of Missouri Extension.

Dave Officer with Alpharma will run the high-tech equipment and give the results on each group instantly.

Huffman will give a brief critique of the calves along with Joplin Yards representatives who are jointly hosting the evening's activities with University of Missouri Extension.

"After all the cattle are evaluated they'll head for southwest Iowa and the Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity. There they will be fed for 160 to 190 days and individual data in the feedlot and in the carcass will be obtained," said Cole.
