Red meat production up

South Dakota

Commercial red meat production for South Dakota totaled 81.9 million pounds during August 2010. This was up 12 percent from July and up nine percent from last year's 75.4 million pounds. For August, pork production was up from one year ago, according to the South Dakota office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Commercial hog slaughter for South Dakota totaled 377,500 head during August, compared to 344,300 head the year before. Average live weight was 260 pounds, unchanged from August 2009.

Commercial sheep and lamb slaughter for South Dakota totaled 300 head during August, unchanged from a year earlier. Average live weight was 134 pounds, up three pounds from August 2009.
