Mike Edgerton to present K-State grain science Centennial Celebration LectureKansas Continuing improvements in agricultural productivity as well as environmental and economic impacts will be discussed as part of the Centennial Celebration Lecture Series sponsored by the Kansas State University Department of Grain Science and Industry. Mike Edgerton, technology lead for corn ethanol and quality traits for Monsanto, will present "The Future of Agricultural Biotechnology." The lecture will take place in the Hale Library Hemisphere Room on March 3 at 2 p.m. The lecture is open to the public. Edgerton will discuss the challenges in meeting the expected increase in population and food demand as it relates to the growing concern for minimizing agriculture's environmental impact. "Agriculture is facing a number of challenges. Growing populations and income, especially in the developing world, are expected to lead to a 70-percent increase in food demand by 2050. At the same time, we are looking to agriculture for energy products and expecting to reduce the impact of agriculture on the environment," Edgerton said. His presentation will be the second in a six-part lecture series commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Grain Science and Industry Department. "We're excited to welcome Dr. Edgerton to Kansas State University in celebration of our department's anniversary," said Jon Faubion, chairperson of the lecture series. "His research and expertise in the corn ethanol and biotechnology field is widely recognized and distinguished. The Centennial Lecture Series is providing an excellent and compelling forum for discussion of the many challenges that lie ahead in the diverse field of agriculture."
