Summit will unite ag, food industry leadersThe early registration deadline for the Animal Agriculture Alliance's Ninth Annual Stakeholders Summit is fast approaching. On April 28 to 29, leaders from the food and farm sectors will meet in Arlington, Va., to discuss the impact of activists on the vitality and security of the United States. Featuring presentations from more than 20 industry experts, the 2010 Summit promises to be a can't-miss event. The Summit's theme, "Truth, Lies and Videotape: Is Activism Jeopardizing Our Food Security?" will help attendees understand the wide-reaching implications of activists' attacks on agriculture. Featured speakers include former Department of Homeland Security Undersecretary Asa Hutchinson and Wesley J. Smith, author of "A Rat is a Pig is a Dog is a Boy: The Human Cost of the Animal Rights Movement." A full 100 percent of 2009 Summit attendees rated the program "excellent" or "good." The Alliance will build on past success by featuring a diverse group of speakers who will share their expertise on the many-faceted issue of animal activism at the 2010 Summit. Moderator Sara Wyant of Agri-Pulse Communications, Inc. will facilitate discussion between speakers and attendees on topics ranging from animal health and food safety to using social media to advocate for agriculture. "The Alliance has succeeded in organizing an educational and thought-provoking conference for attendees," Alliance Executive Vice President Kay Johnson Smith said. "The 2010 Stakeholders Summit represents a unique forum for industry leaders to learn about a wide range of issues facing agriculture today." The Summit will be held at The Westin Arlington Gateway hotel in Arlington, Va. Early registration for the one-and-a-half day event is $325 for Alliance members and $375 for non-members. The Alliance is offering a special rate of $275 for those in government or academia. A workshop will be held at the conclusion of the Summit to explore the effectiveness of state-level agriculture coalitions and present strategic ideas for ensuring consumer confidence. The meeting will feature presentations on two states' initiatives that have been employed, as well as recommendations from the intriguing research about how animal rights groups are using religion to promote their agenda that was presented by Wes Jamison at the 2009 Summit. The workshop will also allow attendees to discuss the strategies and options available when responding to threats to agriculture in their home states. The workshop is being offered for a fee of $50, and registration materials are available on the Alliance's website.
