Ballinger's Agri-Plex Ag Day celebrates 25 years on March 18Texas The 2010 Agri-Plex Ag Day is set for March 18 at Ballinger High School. This year marks the event's 25th year in existence. "It's a little confusing," said Marty Gibbs, Texas AgriLife Extension Service agent in Runnels County. "That's because it's now a biennial event, so this is not the 25th Ag-Day, but rather the 25th year it's been around. The whole day is devoted to agriculture and consumer issues facing rural Texans," he said. "We again have a full schedule and topics that should interest just about everyone in rural West Texas." Gibbs said Ag Day is conducted by AgriLife Extension with support from area agribusinesses and trade show exhibitors. Activities will include a trade show featuring some 30 commercial exhibits; the trade show opens concurrently with registration at 9 a.m. A health fair will again be offered in the cafeteria beginning at 9 a.m., with booths manned by representatives from Ballinger Memorial Hospital, the Texas Department of State Health Services, North Runnels Hospital, Ballinger Home Health, Stepping Stones Program and the West Texas Rehabilitation Center. Participants may choose from two concurrent sessions starting at 10 a.m.: the consumer program in the school's home economics department or the agricultural producers program in the school auditorium. The producers program will focus on wind energy, cap-and-trade legislation, feral hog damages to crops, and new cotton root rot technologies. The consumer session will feature talks on cancer prevention, lasagna gardening and investment education for farm families. All sessions will break at 11:45 a.m. for a combined awards program in the auditorium followed by a complimentary meal. The awards program is highlighted with the naming of the Farm Family of the Year, Agribusiness of the Year and Pat Lee Memorial Scholarship recipient. The youth program will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the cafeteria with a presentation on Internet safety followed by concurrent sessions on wildlife safety, toxic-plant awareness and youth cancer prevention. The Southern Rolling Plains Cotton Growers Association annual meeting will start at 3 p.m. in the auditorium and is the day's final event. Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units (one general and one integrated pest management) will be offered to participants in the afternoon sessions. The entire program is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the AgriLife Extension office in Runnels County at 325-365-2219.
