Kids' gardening classes begin April 1 at Rutledge-Wilson Farm Community Park

Missouri

A new "Adventures in Gardening" series of classes for children ages 3 to 8 begins April 1 at Rutledge-Wilson Farm Community Park, 3825 W. Farm Road 146 in Springfield.

Classes will be divided by age with "Roots and Shoots" classes for children ages 3 to 5 and "Garden Explorers" classes for children ages 6 to 8 being offered on different dates.

"Children are naturally curious at these ages and eager to learn. We're pleased to be able to offer this series of classes to help kids and their families learn about topics like how plants grow, insects, gardening with our senses and more," said Amy Tuggle, a member of the Master Gardeners of Greene County, who is coordinating the children's gardening program.

Class topics include "How Plants Grow," "Growing and Eating Our Veggies," "Insects: From Pretty to Super Cool," "Gardening With Our Senses," "Going Green in the Garden," "Our Feathered Garden Friends," and "Trees, Leaves and Bark."

Classes for "Roots and Shoots" (ages 3 to 5) will be offered on April 1, May 6, June 3, July 1, Aug. 5, Sept. 2 and Oct. 7. Classes for "Garden Explorers" (ages 6 to 8) will be offered on April 22, May 27, June 24, July 22, Aug. 26, Sept. 23 and Oct. 28.

Each class will be offered at three different times: 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., and 6:15 to 7 p.m. on the respective dates.

There is a minimal registration fee of $3 per class charged to cover the cost of materials. To pre-register, since space is limited, call Rutledge-Wilson Farm Community Park at 417-837-5949 or 417-837-5944. Registration forms are also available online at http://extension.missouri.edu/greene.

The classes are being conducted as a partnership between University of Missouri Extension, Master Gardeners of Greene County, 4-H and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board.
