Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow meet at Tarleton State

Texas

Tarleton State University's chapter of the national organization Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow played host to some of the brightest agricultural communication students the United States has to offer.

Approximately 115 college students from across the nation and one chapter from Canada descended on Tarleton's campus for the annual ACT Professional Development Conference held Feb. 25 to 28.

The national organization received bids from several universities from across the country at the 2009 conference held on Oklahoma State University's campus. After the votes were tallied, Tarleton emerged as the host university for the 2010 conference.

The conference featured speakers from across Texas with expertise in the agricultural communications field. Workshops focused on marketing, photograph editing software, journalism, professional development, public relations and graphic design.

In addition to workshop sessions, participants toured Wiseman House Chocolates in Hico, Rough Creek Lodge in Glen Rose and Bluff Dale Winery in Bluff Dale. All three businesses spoke to students about the various aspects of marketing and public relations as well as provided an inside look into their respective operations.

Rising to the challenge of hosting the event, Tarleton ACT members formed specific task committees and assigned duties in the early fall of 2009. The members explained that the event was a source of applied learning.

"We have put a lot of work into this conference," said Trey Berend, Tarleton ACT treasurer. "We want everyone to feel their trip to Tarleton was worthwhile and that they gained something they could take back to their chapters."

Professionals in the agricultural industry and members of the communication community attended the conference to gain insight into the relatively new area of agricultural communications.

"This conference has given our chapter members hands-on experience in event planning as well as networking with industry professionals," said Julie Vrazel, Tarleton ACT editor and program chairperson.

Along with professional development and networking, the conference offered a social interaction program featuring Ryan Clauson, a guest comedian speaker. Clauson is well known for his comedic approach to dating and social interaction.
