Herring elected president of CattleFax
James Herring of Amarillo, Texas, has been elected as the new president of CattleFax, a member-owned and member-directed cattle market information and research organization. Jon Ferguson of Kensington, Kan., is the new president-elect.
Herring is President and CEO of Friona Industries, L. P. in Amarillo, Texas. Friona is the fourth-largest cattle feeding operation in the United States, with four commercial feedlots in the Texas Panhandle with one-time capacity of 275,000 head.
He was formerly president and chairman of the Board of Marcom International, Inc., a Dallas, Texas-based conglomerate that included a commodity brokerage company, an agricultural finance company, and subsidiaries with various interests in oil and gas, cattle and real estate.
Herring was a founding shareholder of First National Bank of Park Cities in Dallas, Texas, and served as a director from 1985 until 1991. He is past president of Texas Cattle Feeders Association, has served several terms on the executive committee and as a director since 1990. He has also served as a director and member of the executive committee of the National Cattleman's Beef Association. Herring is past chairman of the Cal Farley's Boys Ranch Foundation Board of Trustees and is a past chairman of the Amarillo Area Foundation. He is a former director and executive committee member of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce and past chairman of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce Ag Development Council. He also serves on the Rabobank North American Agribusiness Advisory Board. In January 2004 Herring was appointed to the Texas Water Development Board and, in 2008, was named its Chairman by Governor Rick Perry.
Herring was awarded the Ladd Hitch Award for innovation and leadership by "Beef Today" magazine for the year 2000, and was presented the Vision Award for 2008 by the National Cattleman's Beef Association Foundation.
He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Texas at Austin and an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School.
President-elect Jon Ferguson is owner/manager of Ferguson Brothers, Inc., a diversified cattle and farming operation. The cattle operation includes a commercial cow/calf enterprise, a backgrounding and stocker operation and ownership of a portion of the cattle through the finishing phase.
Ferguson has served the industry in many leadership positions in his career. He is the past president of the Kansas Livestock Association. He served as chairman on several councils within the Kansas Livestock Association since 1987 to present. He has also served on the Kansas Beef Council's Executive Committee since 1994.
Ferguson has served on numerous national organizations, including NCBA Treasurer (2001-2004), NCBA Executive Committee (1996-2001, 2004-present), NCBA Board of Directors (1994-present), NCBA Governance Task Force (2008-present) and the NCBA Ag Policy Committee (1991-1997, 2007-2009).
