Gov. Ritter announces disaster designation for several Colorado counties

Gov. Bill Ritter announced today the U.S. Department of Agriculture has granted a request for disaster designation in several Colorado counties where crops have been affected by drought and an early frost.

Gov. Ritter sent a letter on Jan. 7 to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack asking for secretarial disaster designation. Fremont County experienced damaging frost and freezing temperatures on Oct. 8, 9 and 11, 2009. The early frost rendered unharvested apples worthless. The Western Slope saw a wet spring turn into a very dry summer. Various crops in Mesa, Montezuma, Dolores, San Miguel and Montrose counties were damaged due to drought at levels that qualify for disaster designation.
