Buying feed, culling during drought

Wyoming

A new publication from the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service examines the strategies of purchasing additional feed and partial herd liquidation during drought.

"Managing your ranch during drought: Implications from long- and short-term analyses," B-1205, examines different combinations of drought and price cycles to determine how the strategies perform across different situations.

Research suggests there is potential for greater long-term profits if producers buy additional feed to address forage shortages, but the practice can be risky because borrowing and costs may increase in the short run. The authors suggest producers not willing to accept additional risk are better off to cull deeper.

The publication is available for free download by going to http://ces.uwyo.edu and clicking the Publications link. Click Search Bulletins and type B-1205 into the Publication Number field, and then click on the publication title link. Paper copies are available for $3 each by clicking on the Request Hard Copy link below the price.
