McGrann inducted into Tyrus R. Timm Honor Registry

Texas

Jim McGrann, Ph.D., who for 32 years served as an economist with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service and pioneered a computer-assisted beef cattle management program adopted by the industry, has been inducted into the Tyrus R. Timm Honor Registry.

The registry in the Department of Agricultural Economics at Texas A&M University recognizes outstanding former students for meritorious accomplishments in their field. It is the highest department-level honor and is named after Tyrus R. Timm, who led the department from 1953 until 1973 during its rise to national prominence in teaching, research and Extension. Timm was known for his knowledge of finance and agricultural banking.

McGrann was inducted into the registry during a reception and dinner held at the Best Western Atrea in Bryan.

"We are extremely proud of Dr. McGrann's accomplishments throughout his career," said John P. Nichols, Ph.D., department head. "Jim left a legacy upon retiring in 2004. He set a high standard for farm and ranch Extension programming. Most importantly, he was an innovator in developing analytical tools and decision aids for farmers and ranchers."

McGrann created the Standardized Performance Analysis software, which has been adopted throughout the beef industry to evaluate financial and production performance of cow herds. The program was initiated when members of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association-Integrated Resource Management coordinating committee, and its research and education committee requested a means whereby specific records in summary form could be compared to national production averages.

His work expanded to 21 countries, where he was involved in international conferences in computer applications in agriculture in Brazil, New Zealand, Australia and Hungary. He also extended his work in ranch management information systems to Paraguay and Argentina, and taught graduate courses in Guatemala focusing on advanced management information systems.

McGrann was an original member of the nationwide Farm Financial Standards Task Force that developed a set of national financial reporting and analysis guidelines for agricultural producers.

His career contributions earned him the title of Professor Emeritus Extension Economist in 2004. McGrann currently is vice president of the International Farm Management Association and operates a private ranch management and economist consultancy that serves livestock producers.

McGrann received his doctorate in agricultural economics from Texas A&M, and bachelor's and master's degrees both in agricultural economics from Washington State University.
