K-State Summer Beef Conference will focus on value optimization

By Richard C. Snell

Barton County Extension Agent, Agriculture

Several of you out there rely on beef cattle to grow the size of your operation. You may not have the opportunity to rent more land to farm, so increasing the value of your product is hopefully where you can increase your net income. In response to that, I hope you will save yourself some money by registering early for the K-State Beef Conference. You will make money from the tips you pick up by attending this conference.

Kansas State University Research and Extension will host the 2010 K-State Beef Conference on Aug. 12 with the theme "Value Optimization."

Registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the program at 9 a.m. in the Frick Auditorium of Mosier Hall in K-State's College of Veterinary Medicine Complex in Manhattan. In addition to on-site participation, attendees can register to view the conference via live video feed at Pratt Community College, Butler Community College or the WaKeeney Public Library.

More information and online registration is available at www.asi.ksu.edu/beefconference or by calling Charlotte Bruna at 785-532-1280. The early registration fee of $60 per person or $100 for two from the same family, ranch or organization is due by July 30. The registration includes conference materials, a noon meal and refreshments. The 2010 K-State Beef Conference is co-sponsored by K-State Research and Extension, Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health and Quality Liquid Feeds.

Barton County Fair was a success

I know that I say this nearly every year, but I will say it again and I really mean it--we have the best volunteers in the world right here in Barton County. I am always amazed at the amount of time, hard work and dedication that I see at our county fair.

This is true of our Fair Board and Friends of the Fair, who always come up with some new twists and work to decorate for a theme. It was incredible all the good ideas that were exhibited to enhance the "game" element.

Thanks go out to all the people who helped me out at the fair in the crops and livestock activities. There are probably too many to remember, but at the risk at leaving someone out, I will name a few. If I don't mention you, believe me, I am grateful for any and all of what you did to make things run smoothly.
