Iowa receives broadband improvement funding

Iowa

Congressman Leonard Boswell announced that Iowa has received $71.4 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act loans and grants to extend and improve broadband services across the states.

"These loans and grants will improve the quality of life for thousands of communities in the state's rural areas," Boswell said. "Additionally, it will support more than 450 jobs upfront with more to be added as these systems and services need to be maintained. There are so many small businesses, farm operations, and families in rural Iowa that deserve access to 21st-century technology."

The funding will be allocated as follows:

--$16.2 million grant to the Iowa Communications Network to upgrade an existing 3,000-mile network with points of presence in every county. Project will benefit over 4,500 community institutions.

--$17.7 million grant to the Iowa Health System to upgrade and enhance the health system's existing fiber network that services over 200 healthcare facilities and additional residents and businesses statewide. Project will benefit $1.7 million Iowans.

--$18.7 million grant and loan to the Farmers' Telephone Company of Riceville, Iowa, to construct a FTTP network and expand broadband access. Project will benefit 8,500 Iowans.

--$9.3 million grant and loan to the Grand River Mutual Telephone Corporation to provide broadband service. Project will benefit 1,300 Iowans.

--$5.3 million grant and loan to the Ellsworth Cooperative Telephone Association to provide high speed Internet service to Ellsworth and Garden City and their surrounding rural areas. Project will benefit 1,300 Iowans.

--$2.6 million grant and loan to Breda Telephone Corp. to update two rural exchanges with high speed Internet and video services. Project will benefit 1,600 Iowans.

--$20.3 million grant and loan to Grand River Mutual Telephone Corporation to provide broadband service in southern Iowa and northern Missouri. Project will benefit 5,200 people, 339 businesses, and 36 other community institutions.
