Hay trade slow to moderateIn Kansas, the hay trade is slow to moderate. Demand is strong for dairy alfalfa, moderate to strong for grinding and stock cow alfalfa, moderate for alfalfa pellets and grass hay, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jan. 19. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted. Southwest: Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady to firm. Movement moderate. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $190-$250; supreme dairy, $130-$160; premium, $115-$135; good, $100-$115; fair/good stock cow, $100-$105. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $90-$100. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, $115-$125, ground on truck, $100-$110. For the week ending Jan. 16, 11,841 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,375 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Good bermuda, in large squares, $125-$150. PM6 good, in small squares, $150. BMR sudan, good, in large rounds, $60; fair, in large bales, $45. South central: Dairy/grinding alfalfa and alfalfa pellets steady to firm. Movement moderate. Supreme dairy alfalfa, 65-85 cents/point RFV, $120-$150; premium, $110-$130; good, $95; Stock cow, in medium or large squares, $80-$100. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $70-$85, mostly $70-$80, Utility or wet, $65-$70. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots, $100-$120. For the week ending Jan. 16, 4,587 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,650 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $143-$160; sun-cured, 17% $155-$160; dehydrated, 17% $205. BMR Sudan, good, in large rounds, $60-$65; fair, in large rounds, $45.
