Winter wheat seedings down

South Dakota

Winter wheat seedings for the 2010 crop totaled 1.25 million acres, down 450,000 acres (26 percent) from last year, according to the South Dakota office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This is the lowest level of winter wheat planted since 1980, which had 1.2 million acres planted. This is also the third straight year winter wheat seedings have decreased in South Dakota since the record high of 2.1 million acres were planted for the 2007 crop. Over the last 10 years, South Dakota has averaged 1.61 million acres of winter wheat seedings.
