KFU Convention slated for Jan. 8 and 9, 2010 in Lawrence

2010 will be the year for changes at the Kansas Farmers Union Convention to be held Jan. 8 and 9, 2010 at the Holiday Inn Holidome and Convention Center in Lawrence, Kan., according to Kansas Farmers Union President Donn Teske. This is very appropriate and fits the convention theme "Changing Times." In response to KFU members, the Convention will be more streamlined this year. It will have a shorter schedule, less speakers and more time for discussions and sightseeing. We have a distinguished list of speakers invited to address this year's convention theme. "This will be a no-tie convention," Teske said. "We plan to have a very casual convention and the Convention Banquet will be a good old country barbecue."

National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson; Brittany Jablonsky, Government Relations Rep., for the National Farmers Union; Josh Svaty, Acting Kansas Secretary of Agriculture; Kansas Congressman Jerry Moran (invited); State Treasurer Dennis McKinney; Kathleen Merrigan, Deputy Secretary of Ag, USDA (invited) and Stan Brown, Midwest Regional Manager for Farmers Union Insurances will head up a long list of dignitaries scheduled to speak at the 2010 KFU State Annual Convention. And there is a very special health panel planned for the afternoon Jan. 8.

The convention will officially convene Jan. 8, at 10 a.m., and speakers will address the convention theme "Changing Times." Convention delegates will consider and adopt a policy and by-laws statement for 2010 and will also elect officers and board members to steer the KFU for the coming year. In addition, delegates will be elected to represent KFU at the 2010 NFU Annual Convention to be held March 14 to 16, 2010 at Ramkota, Rapid City, South Dakota.

The convention will begin Jan. 8 with nominations for the various offices of Farmers Union and delegates will consider and adopt policy for the upcoming year. Stan Brown, Midwest Regional Manager for Farmers Union Insurances, will give the annual Insurance Report and State Treasurer Dennis McKinney will report to the delegates and guests at the Jan. 8 Kansas Luncheon. During the general session Jan. 8, there will be a special panel discussion that members and guests will not want to miss. The panel discussion will be moderated by KFU President Donn Teske and the theme for the discussion will be, "Exploring Health Care Reform--Canadian Style." There will be three special panelists from Canada to visit about the Canadian Health Care System and three Americans will be attending to discuss Health Care Reform in America. There will be plenty of time for their opening remarks and a question and answer period.

The Convention Banquet will feature NFU President Roger Johnson and Kathleen Merrigan has been invited from USDA.

On Jan. 9 at the 7:30 a.m., Washington Breakfast, Brittany Jablonsky, National Farmers Union Director Government Relations, will give an agricultural policy update and U.S. Congressman Jerry Moran has been invited. Jan. 9 there will be a series of reports which include: the President's Report given by KFU President Donn Teske and the financial report given by Royce Janssen, CPA. The Farmers Union Luncheon at 12 p.m., will feature Josh Svaty, Kansas Acting Secretary of Agriculture.

Jan. 9 in the afternoon, delegates and guests will have a chance to visit shop and tour the many interesting sites of Lawrence. Reservations can be made by contacting the Holiday Inn Holidome and Convention Center in Lawrence, Kansas at 785-841-7077 ext. 7999.

"Delegates, members and guests should make their reservations early", KFU President Donn Teske commented. "We expect to have a great crowd this year and the hotel will hold a block of rooms for Farmers Union members until Dec. 18, so plan to make your reservations before then. We hope people will make an extra effort to attend this special issues-oriented convention and help us chart our direction for 2010." For further information on the convention, call the KFU State Office 620-241-6630.
