Corn harvest end in sight

Iowa

Iowa received cold, dry weather during the week ending Dec. 6, which helped farmers inch closer to the end of corn harvest, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Iowa Field Office, Dec. 7.

Temperatures were cold enough to allow combines to run on frozen ground. While snowfall was reported last week, levels were not high enough to slow producers trying to finish harvesting corn. The cold weather was not welcomed by all as post-harvest field work stopped late in the week as cropland froze.

There were 5.6 days suitable for fieldwork during the week, compared to 4.3 days last week. Topsoil moisture rated 0 percent very short, 2 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 16 percent surplus across the state. Subsoil moisture rated 0 percent very short, 3 percent short, 79 percent adequate, and 18 percent surplus.

Grain movement was reported at 23 percent none, 32 percent light, 32 percent moderate, and 13 percent heavy. On-farm grain storage availability rated 26 percent short, 71 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus, while off-farm grain storage availability rated 22 percent short, 75 percent adequate, and 3 percent surplus. Reporters estimated 58 percent of cropland had fall applications of fertilizer complete, 13 percentage points ahead of last year, but 13 percentage points behind the five-year average.

Corn harvested for grain reached 94 percent, up 7 percentage points from the previous week.

Use of stubble fields was reported 43 percent none, 31 percent light, 22 percent moderate, and 4 percent heavy. Hay and roughage availability is currently rated 7 percent short, 82 percent adequate, and 11 percent surplus. The quality of hay and roughage is currently rated 10 percent poor, 47 percent fair, and 43 percent good.
