Ninth Annual Texas Commodity Symposium program announcedTexas The ninth annual Texas Commodity Symposium will be held Dec. 2, and is hosted by Corn Producers of Texas, Texas Grain Sorghum Association, Texas Wheat Producers Association, Plains Cotton Growers, Inc. and the Texas Peanut Producers Board. The symposium will be held in conjunction with the Amarillo Farm and Ranch Show in the Grand Plaza Room at the Amarillo Civic Center. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., and the symposium will begin at 9 a.m. The event is free to all and will conclude with a catered lunch at noon. This year's symposium will provide an interesting perspective on a heated issue--agricultural water use. Darren Hudson, professor and Larry Combest Chair for Agricultural Competitiveness and director of the Cotton Economics Research Institute at Texas Tech University, will address the scenario of what would happen to the economy of Texas cities and towns on the High Plains if farmers were no longer allowed to irrigate their crops. Hudson will be joined by a panel of businessmen who will discuss the impact of irrigated crop revenues on their businesses. There will also be a Washington perspective on issues such as indirect land use, cap and trade and health care. "We're excited to offer attendees an interesting program this year that addresses issues that will not only affect the agricultural economy, but also the economy of West Texas in general," said CPAT Executive Vice-President David Gibson. "We encourage producers and businessmen alike to attend this year's Texas Commodity Symposium." Confirmed speakers include Don Gohmert, state conservationist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service and Jaun Garcia, the new state executive director for the Texas Farm Service Agency, who will be giving important program updates. Chris Albracht, morning show host and program director for KGNC Radio, will serve as the master of ceremonies for the event. All attendees are encouraged to register early for a chance to win special door prizes.
