New director at UW's Wyoming Agricultural Experiment StationWyoming The new director of the University of Wyoming's Wyoming Agricultural Experiment Station said the former director's enthusiasm for research and extension centers will be carried on during his tenure. Bret Hess became director Jan. 22, taking over the reins from Stephen D. Miller, who retired. The AES is housed in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at UW. "I'm really excited to have Bret on board," said Frank Galey, dean of the college. "He is an outstanding faculty member and has done an excellent job as associate director of the experiment station and is ready to move into the job. I think the experiment station will be in good hands with Dr. Hess at the helm." Hess, a professor in the Department of Animal Science, served as AES assistant director for three and a half years. He joined UW as an assistant professor in 1996, coming from the University of Missouri. "Former director Steve Miller is an outstanding mentor, and he exuded such enthusiasm for the R&E Centers that I have developed a similar passion to ensure their vitality," said Hess. "I would also like to thank Dean Galey and others who have provided their support." Hess said the position allows him greater leadership responsibilities, although his research activities will be reduced. "Research has been one of the most enjoyable and rewarding aspects of my career," he said. "I wish to continue research in this position, although I realize I will not be able to maintain my research program as it currently exists. I anticipate directing my efforts toward facilitating and fostering collaborative research." In addition to directing Research and Extension Centers at Laramie, near Lingle, Powell and Sheridan, the office administers the AES competitive and Global Perspectives grants programs, the college's federal projects, and the college's livestock inventory; assists college personnel with extramural funding; oversees the college research magazine "Reflections" and department reviews in the college; and serves as a mentor for faculty members on the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities Experiment Station Committee on Organization and Policy/Academic Programs Committee on Organization and Policy Leadership Development Program.
