Peterson honored with Vice Chancellor's Award in ExcellenceTexas Gary Peterson, Ph.D., professor of grain sorghum breeding and genetics based at the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Lubbock, received a 2009 Vice Chancellor's Award in Excellence in the international involvement category. His honor was presented during the 2010 AgriLife Conference held recently at Texas A&M University in College Station. Peterson's nomination noted that he was recognized for his 27 years of sustained leadership in sorghum improvement and education of international students. Specifically, his work with the International Sorghum and Millet collaborative research program was highlighted. The primary objective of the program is to improve food security, enhance farm income and improve economic activity in the major sorghum and millet producing countries in Africa and Central America, according to the nomination. Peterson's efforts with the collaborative have provided a balanced program ranging from food processing and supply chain management to plant breeding and pathology research. Because of his efforts, many students have been educated in U.S. universities and have returned to Africa to contribute to solving food problems. A colleague's letter of support said some of these students are in key positions and are now working in grain improvement programs in Southern Africa and elsewhere. Peterson has contributed significantly to these graduate programs and continues to maintain contact with them.
