Speakers added to governor's ag conference lineup

Nebraska

Greg Ibach, director of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, announced additional speakers have been added to the lineup for the 22nd Annual Governor's Ag Conference. The conference, scheduled for March 3 and 4, will be held at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Kearney.

"We've added two speakers who will address the issues of animal welfare and biotechnology. These are topics that truly will impact the future for all farmers and ranchers," said Ibach.

Jack Fisher is the executive vice president of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation. He was instrumental in Ohio's passage last fall of Issue 2, which implemented the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board. Fisher will discuss Ohio agriculture's proactive approach to out-of-state activists' attempts to influence animal agriculture practices via ballot initiative.

Sally Mackenzie, Ph.D., is a professor with the Center for Plant Science Innovation at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Mackenzie's research is in the area of plant molecular genetics, and she will discuss emerging biotechnologies and genomics data that will have a strong impact on agriculture in the future.

Ibach reminded the public that NDA is still accepting registrations to the conference. Those interested in attending can register by calling NDA toll-free at 800-831-0550. The registration deadline is Feb. 22.

Pre-conference activities will begin at 6 p.m. CST on Wednesday, March 3, with the "Celebrate Nebraska Agriculture" reception, featuring foods produced in Nebraska. The conference will convene at 9 a.m. CST on March 4.

Speakers previously announced by Governor Dave Heineman include Jason Henderson, vice president at the Omaha Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City; James B. Milliken, president of the University of Nebraska; Stan Garbacz, the agricultural trade representative for the Nebraska Department of Agriculture; Cheryl Stubbendieck, vice president, public relations for the Nebraska Farm Bureau; and Terry Landes II, marketing and public relations manager for Prairieland Dairy in Firth.

The conference is open to anyone interested in learning more about the issues facing Nebraska agriculture. A $75 registration fee covers participation at both the conference and the Wednesday evening reception. More information, including the schedule, is available at www.agr.ne.gov.
