Housing funds available from USDA Rural Development loan program funded at highest level in 15 years

Kansas

USDA Rural Development is seeking applications from residents who qualify for the agency's Single Family Housing Direct Loan Program. The program provides home purchase financing, repairs, and refinancing provisions for lower income families. This year, in addition to the regular annual allocation of funds from Congress, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act appropriations have been added to the program totals. This has increased available financing to over 225 percent of the previous fiscal year.

State Director Patty Clark said, "This is a wonderful opportunity for rural families and individuals in Kansas to move into home ownership. Increasing affordable housing opportunities helps to strengthen our families, improves economic development opportunities, and enhances a community's overall quality of life."

USDA Rural Development's Single Family Housing Direct Loan Program does not require a down payment, does not charge any points, and does not require mortgage insurance. Most loans also qualify for payment assistance, which reduces the monthly mortgage payment for the family. Homes purchased must be in good repair and located in an eligible rural area, which includes most towns with a population up to 20,000.

USDA Rural Development has reorganized staff to deliver the unprecedented amount of funding. Ample funding is anticipated and must be obligated by Sept. 30.

USDA Rural Development's mission is to increase economic opportunity and improve the quality of life for rural residents. Rural Development fosters growth in home ownership, finances business development and supports the creation of critical community and technology infrastructure.
