Photo contest winners feature Colorado ag

Colorado

From corn fields and buffalo to vineyards and western heritage, the winning pictures from the 12th annual "Colorado...It's Agricultural" Photography Contest showcase the spirit of Colorado agriculture.

"We had a record number of entries for the 2009 contest, so the competition was tough," said Wendy White, marketing specialist at the Colorado Department of Agriculture. "The judges noticed an increase in technical quality this year, and they were pleased with the diversity of Colorado agriculture featured in the photographs."

The winners were selected from 180 entries based on relation to Colorado agriculture, creativity and technical quality.

The grand-prize winner and recipient of a $150 gift card is Dan Ballard of La Junta, Colo., with his entry entitled "A Different View." The winning photograph depicts a lush Colorado corn field under a sky of ominous thunder clouds.

Other top finishers include Jim Cox, Palisade, Colo., first place in the Agritourism category with "Bikes and Vineyard"; Jenn Hafelfinger, Wiggins, Colo., first place Livestock with "Zeus"; and Jamie Brown, Walden, Colo., first place People with "Little Roper."

Other individuals receiving an honorable mention include Kinsey Rippy, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Lou Costy, Fort Collins, Colo.; Sue Hodgson, Brush, Colo.; Samantha Troudt, New Raymer, Colo.; Margaret Sanderson, Monte Vista, Colo.; Mack Hitch, Sterling, Colo.; Gary Rich, Aurora, Colo.; Dee Jensen, Fleming, Colo.; Michelle Marriott, Cañon City, Colo.; and Dan Ballard, La Junta, Colo.

Winning photographs will be displayed in the Beede-Hamil Agriculture Building at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo. They are also available online at www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellite/Agriculture-Main/CDAG/1251570139602.

The 2010 contest is now under way. Photographers can enter their pictures through Dec. 31 in four categories: Agritourism, Crops, Livestock and People. Started in 1998, the "Colorado...It's Agricultural" Photography Contest is sponsored by the AgInsights Committee, Colorado Department of Agriculture and Northeastern Junior College.
