Workshop emphasizes keys to sustainability

Wyoming

A sustainable ranching workshop focusing on profit, production, enjoyment and family is in Casper this month.

The session, hosted by the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service, is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Feb. 18 at the Agricultural Resource Learning Center in Casper, 2011 Fairgrounds Road.

A $5 fee covers materials and lunch. RSVPs are requested by Feb. 15 by calling UW CES educators Tom Heald at 307-235-9400 in Casper or Ashley Garrelts in Douglas at 307-358-2417.

The sessions were developed from components of the High Plains Ranch Practicum School, a UW CES program in southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska. UW CES educator Dallas Mount and Aaron Berger, University of Nebraska Extension-Lincoln educator, direct the practicum. Presenters at the Casper session include Mount, Berger and other instructors of the practicum.

"Ranchers who have participated in the full ranch practicum course reported significant improvements in ranch profitability and knowledge gained from the course," said Mount.

Key concepts are ranch financials--how to determine your unit cost of production and compare against regional benchmarks; integrating nutrition, body condition scoring and reproductive performance; grazing systems--developing an applied grazing system and simple methods for monitoring rangeland systems; and strategic planning--working on the ranch business and with the people involved in it.

For more effective use of the time, participants are asked to either read the pre-reading material or watch the video presentations. Both are available at HPRanchPracticum.com, or hard copies and DVDs are available by contacting the Casper or Douglas UW CES offices at the numbers above.

Material will not be reviewed at the session; the concepts will be discussed and applied at the workshop.
