Navarro County agent receives Texas AgriLife Extension Service award

Texas

Derek Scasta, Texas Agri-Life Extension Service agent for agriculture and natural resources in Navarro County, was honored with a Superior Service Award at the annual Texas A&M AgriLife Conference held in January in College Station.

The award cited Scasta's work in rallying volunteers for environmentally related efforts such as county-wide cleanups of hazardous chemicals, electronic waste and used automobile tires.

"The protection of our natural resources is of utmost importance to TRWD," wrote Darrel Andrews, assistant director of the Tarrant Regional Water District environmental division, in his award nomination letter. "Because of the continued efforts of individuals like Derek, who have the ability to perform at the grassroots level, TRWD's regional level efforts continue to gain support."

Nomination letters also noted Scasta's tireless work ethic and praised him for going "way beyond what the average person would consider the norm," said Kit Herrington, Navarro County commissioner.

"I have been with Navarro County working in the capacity of county commissioner for Precinct 1 for eight years and have been in contact with extension agents and county employees in general for that time," Herrington said. "It is difficult to meet a more dedicated and hard-working young man. Derek and I have worked closely on tire disposal, which was a huge undertaking. We ended up receiving and disposing of over 8,000 tires for the cleanup."

Since 2007, Scasta enrolled hundreds of volunteers to dispose of waste tires. In 2009, nearly 400 Navarro residents collected more than 27 tons of electronic waste for recycling. In the same year, nearly 8,700 waste tires were collected.
