Missouri corn grower travels to the Middle East, northern AfricaMissouri Missouri corn farmer Jim Stuever, of Dexter, Mo., returned Dec. 12 from a trade mission to Morocco, Egypt and Jordan where he witnessed firsthand the use of U.S. corn and corn co-products. Encouraging further partnerships with foreign agricultural producers, Stuever joined growers from five other states on the 2009 U.S. Grains Council Corn Mission. "This trip was a great opportunity to learn what other countries expect from their food products and the quality of feed they'd like to have from U.S. corn growers," said Stuever. "Hopefully, these visits will allow us to better understand what our international customers want and build trust for future partnerships." During the 12-day mission, the team toured the diverse agricultural landscapes of Morocco, Egypt and Jordan, visiting beef, dairy, poultry and water buffalo feeding operations. They met with agricultural leaders, learned about the current use of U.S. corn and corn co-products and discussed market expansion opportunities for America's grain farmers. "The demand for U.S. corn and corn co-products, such as distillers grain, is really growing," said Stuever. "We have toured several farms that are making good use by incorporating U.S. distillers grain into their livestock rations." He goes on to say, "Developing foreign markets like these help build a stronger grain economy here at home and hopefully increase corn exports to these countries and our other global partners." Stuever is a board member for the Missouri Corn Growers Association and serves as the treasurer of the Missouri Corn Merchandising Council. He also represents Missouri corn growers on the USGC Biotechnology Action Team. The 2009 Corn Mission was made possible in part by matching funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service. Missouri Corn Merchandising Council is a longstanding supporter of the U.S. Grains Council and its mission to expand grain marketing opportunities abroad.
