Sunflower growers boast high yieldsMANDAN, N.D. (AP)--The National Sunflower Association says there were several reasons for record and near-record sunflower yields last year in major producing states. Officials cite favorable weather, improved weed control and better hybrids. The North Dakota-based sunflower group says the national average oil sunflower yield last year was 1,563 pounds per acre, one pound less than the record set in 2005. South Dakota and Kansas had record yields. North Dakota's average yield was the third-highest on record in the state.
