Nutrition exhibit will make several stops in southwest Missouri during 2010Missouri "Food Power Adventure"--a popular traveling nutrition exhibit provided by University of Missouri Extension--will make several stops in southwest Missouri during 2010. The exhibit will stop in Nixa (Christian County) the first week of February at the following elementary schools: Century Elementary (Feb. 2), Espy Elementary (Feb. 3), Thomas Elementary (Feb. 4) and High Point Elementary (Feb. 5). Later in the month, Food Power Adventure will make stops in Greene and Dade counties at the following elementary schools: Logan-Rogersville Early Childhood Center (Feb. 17), Logan-Rogersville Primary School (Feb. 18), and Greenfield Elementary School (Feb. 19). In the process of having fun, children will learn where food comes from and how it gives them energy and helps them grow, according to Brenda Shannon, University of Missouri Extension's Food Power Adventure coordinator in southwest Missouri. Students make nine stops in their adventure and get an inside look at how food turns into energy. Students start at the pizza farm, then they put labels on milk cartons in the food packaging area and pick up food tags in the cafeteria station. Then, they are on their way through the digestive system so they can change their food into power and try it out in the muscle and bones stations. "School children are excited to learn about nutrition and physical activity with innovative and exciting experiences that help them see how the healthy food choices they make give them the energy they need to grow and play," said Shannon. Food Power Adventure adds unique activities to the nutrition lessons already being presented in many schools by classroom teachers and University of Missouri Extension nutrition educators. The display is not open to the public, although numerous parents are volunteering to help. For more program information or for details on how your school can schedule the Food Power Adventure next year, contact Shannon at 417-866-3039. Food Power Adventure is a program being offered by University of Missouri Extension in cooperation with the Department of Nutritional Sciences, College of Human Environmental Sciences, University of Missouri-Columbia. It adds activity-based experiences to the University of Missouri Family Nutrition Education programs, which are funded in part by USDA's Food Stamp Program.
