Markey announces $2.5 million for Phillips energy projectColorado Rep. Betsy Markey (D-CO) announced that Phillips County will receive $2,500,000 in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to help launch a community-owned, 30-megawatt wind energy project, with an ultimate goal to build a 650-megawatt wind farm within Sedgwick, Phillips, and Logan counties in Northeast Colorado. "This is great news for Northeast Colorado," said Markey. "We must stop sending billions of dollars to Middle East dictators to support our energy needs, and local energy systems like this can play a key role in breaking our dependence on Middle East oil. It's time for America to take back control of our energy, our security, and our jobs, and Northeast Colorado is helping to lead that charge." This project will benefit the local economy by sharing the project's revenues with local landowners and other project participants, by generating local jobs, substantial property taxes, and providing renewable energy for the area's primary communities. Plans for sharing this ownership model are part of the business plan and will be coordinated with the U.S. Department of Energy. The Phillips County project will also serve as models for other local governments, campuses or small utilities to replicate, allowing other communities to design projects that fit their individual size and energy demands.
