Keeping dairy records safeBackup 101: A computer backup system is vital to preventing loss of important production, financial and management files on your operation. No single computer backup system is best for all operations. To help you get started, here are some tips: --Choose a backup system. Great choices include compact discs, recordable DVDs, internal or external hard drives, online backup services and flash drives. --Prepare your backup device. For example, if you are using an external hard drive, only use it for backup purposes. It seems pretty obvious, but make sure the system or device you are using can handle the backup job. --Set aside time for frequent backups. The process of backing up a hard drive can take a long time, especially if you have quite a bit of data that you plan to save. Schedule the backup at a designated time on a regular basis and at a time when the computer will be on, but not when you will be using it. --Save the files. Open the program where the files to be saved are located. Next, select the files you wish to keep. Then highlight the place where you will be saving the backup, and start it up. Keep your backups in a safe place. Fire-resistant safes and safety deposit boxes are secure places to keep backup media, depending on the importance of the files you wish to save. If files are not critical, storing them in a filing cabinet or desk is acceptable. --Don't wait until you lose important production and financial files. Set time aside now to protect your data on your computer's hard drive. This tip of the week has been brought to you by Dairy Calf and Heifer Association.
