Some parts of state get rain, others remain dry

Colorado

Colorado experienced larger amounts of rain in the west and in the San Luis Valley area of the state while the eastern half experienced dry, warm weather during the week ending Aug. 22, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Colorado Field Office, Aug. 23.

Temperatures remained average for this time of year. These conditions allowed producers 6.3 days in the field.

Spring barley had 39 percent harvested, 4 points behind the 5-year average with the crop rated in mostly good condition. Spring wheat was 98 percent turning color with 20 percent harvested by week's end. The crop was reported in mostly good to fair condition.

Corn progressed to 72 percent at or beyond the dough stage with 10 percent dented and was rated in good to excellent condition by the end of the week. The harvest of corn silage has been reported at 2 percent complete, behind the 5-year average of 5 percent.

Sorghum was 94 percent headed with 40 percent turning color and 1 percent mature. The crop was rated in good to fair condition. Sunflowers were rated in mostly good to fair condition. Dry onions were 9 percent harvested by week's end with the crop rated in mostly good condition.

Summer potatoes were 10 percent harvested with the crop reported in mostly good condition at the end of the week. Fall potatoes were reported in mostly good to excellent condition.

Sugarbeets were rated in mostly good condition. Dry beans are 96 percent flowered, ahead of the 5-year average of 92 percent with 1 percent cut, while maintaining mostly good to fair condition.

Conditions for pasture and range across Colorado remained in mostly good to fair condition last week. The second cutting of alfalfa progressed to 96 percent complete and 38 percent of the third cutting of alfalfa has been completed. The alfalfa hay crop is rated in mostly good condition. Death losses for cattle and sheep were at average for the week. Stored feed supplies remain at average for this time of year and livestock are rated in mostly good condition.
