River Valley 4-H Livestock Judging Team wins State Contest

Three River Valley District 4-H Livestock Judging Teams competed in the 2010 Kansas 4-H Livestock Sweepstakes held Aug. 21 and 22 in Manhattan with one team capturing the state title and the opportunity to represent Kansas at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky., in November.

The Kansas 4-H Livestock Sweepstakes consists of four division including livestock judging, meats judging, quiz bowl and skill-a-thon. The River Valley District had teams competing in all four areas, placing first in livestock judging, second in skill-a-thon and third in quiz bowl for an overall second place finish in the sweepstakes competition, which combines the finishes in the four divisions.

In the livestock judging contest, Brady Jensen led the team as the second high individual overall and was followed by Cody Jensen in sixth place. Other team members were Brooke Jensen and Jake Ohlde.

Livestock Judging Team No. 1 and team members won numerous awards in the contest. The team was the first place swine team with Cody Jensen placing fourth, Brady Jensen placing sixth, and Brooke Jensen placing 10th. In the beef division the team placed third with Brady Jensen placing fourth and Cody Jensen placing sixth. The team placed fifth in sheep with Brady Jensen placing third. In the reasons portion of the contest the River Valley team placed third with Brady Jensen placing third, Brooke Jensen placing fourth and Cody Jensen placing 10th.

River Valley Livestock Judging Team No. 2 consisted of Lauren Forshee, Allissa Kearn, and Lindsey Dankenbring. Team No. 3 was made up of Wyatt Durst, Casey Jensen, and Ben Jensen.

The Skill-a-thon team placed second overall with a score of 240 points. Cody Jensen led this team with a sixth place individual finish. Other team members competing were Brady Jensen, Brooke Jensen, Jake Ohlde, with alternate team members Wyatt Durst and Casey Jensen.

The Quiz Bowl team lost out to the eventual champion coming home with a third place finish. Team members competing were Brady Jensen, Brooke Jensen, Cody Jensen, Jake Ohlde, and Wyatt Durst.

Competing in the meats contest were Jake Ohlde, Casey Jensen, Cody Jensen, and Brady Jensen with Wyatt Durst competing as an alternate and an individual in the intermediate division. Durst placed fourth in the questions portion of the intermediate meats division.

Sheila Jensen, River Valley 4-H volunteer, coached team No. 1 and sponsored the weekend along Robin Slattery, district livestock agent; John Forshee, district director; and Kevin Jensen volunteer.
