Australia's Agriculture Minister Tony Burke has reversed a decision to accept international standards and end its nine-year import ban on bovine spongiform encephalopathy beef imports. The reversal of the decision will close the borders for another two years, leaving New Zealand as the only country able to export beef to Australia until Biosecurity Australia completes an import risk analysis on fresh beef from other countries.
On Oct. 20, 2009, the Australian Government announced a change in Australia's BSE food safety policy for imported beef and beef products, which set new requirements for countries that wished to export beef and beef products to Australia. The new policy went into effect on March 1.
