Kansas Livestock Association receives industry advancement grant

Kansas Livestock Association was one of six state cattle associations to receive assistance to support advocacy and ongoing industry education efforts thanks to a grant from Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health. The RESFLOR GOLD Industry Advancement Grant was awarded at the National Cattlemen's Beef Association Convention in San Antonio, Texas.

The 2010 Kansas Livestock Association's Young Stockmen's Academy class consists of 20 participants from 19 Kansas counties. The RESFLOR GOLD Industry Advancement Grant will assist in funding YSA members in their 20s for a series of four seminars throughout the year. The program will expose the importance of KLA's voice in the legislative process; producers' responsibility to agricultural advocacy; the need for progressive livestock operations and how other segments of the industry, including animal health suppliers and other agribusinesses, fit into the food chain. YSA members will participate in KLA's policymaking process and hear from leaders in the livestock industry.

"We are honored to be chosen as a grant recipient," said Scarlett Hagins, communications program manager of Kansas Livestock Association. "This grant will allow the association to continue providing a high-quality educational program to the future leaders of this industry. The Young Stockmen's Academy, which has allowed the association to expose nearly 80 young producers to the Kansas livestock industry, has proven beneficial in keeping young producers engaged in KLA."

"We established this grant program to help the state associations in their efforts to be able to grow and educate the next generation of cattle men and women," said Paul S. Casady, vice president and general manager of the USA for Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health. "The state associations we're supporting with this grant help ensure that education and quality programs are available at the local level and that is so important to the industry's future and is something we feel very strongly about."
