UW extension serviced ads energy coordinatorWyoming The person hired for a new position in the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service will direct his energy to ensure renewable energy and energy efficiency provide the maximum benefit to Wyoming citizens. Milt Geiger will begin as energy extension coordinator Sept. 14 and will be housed in UW's College of Agriculture. The position is funded by UW CES and the UW School of Energy Resources. Geiger will develop partnerships with the School of Energy Resources and the College of Engineering and Applied Science to coordinate extension and outreach activities among the three partners. "I am fascinated by the interaction between energy, environment and economy," said Geiger, who worked with renewable energy and energy efficiency issues while with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Rural Development in Wyoming and during his thesis research at UW. "Renewable energy and energy efficiency can have many positive aspects across all sectors of society, yet, as with any new technology, drawbacks exist," he said. A Michigan native, Geiger received a bachelor's in environmental economics in 2003 from Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y., and he accepted a position with USDA Rural Development in Casper and then Sheridan. He served as state rural energy coordinator from 2005-2007. Geiger completed two master's degrees at UW in August in agricultural and applied economics and environment and natural resources. "Milt's education and work experience are a great fit for this position to develop energy-related programs to meet the needs of Wyoming citizens," said Susan James, UW CES federal relations and staff development coordinator. "He understands energy issues and has built partnerships in the state in the past." Geiger will marry Cheryl Higgins the end of August. Higgins also received a master's degree in 2009 from UW's Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics.
