West Plains cattle sales report

The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 3,566 head, Sept. 22, compared to 3,918 head, last week and 3,266 head, last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, steers at 450 to 700 pounds and heifers under 650 pounds were $3 to $6 lower, steers under 450 pounds and over 700 pounds along with heifers over 650 pounds sold $1 to $3 lower, even though a few 7 weight steer yearlings were steady late in the day as buyers leveled their loads. The supply was moderate. Demand uneven, continuing best on higher quality, medium flesh, uniform, weaned calves, preferably having 1 to 2 rounds of respiratory shots, when color and kind fit the order. Calves straight off mama without respiratory shots, other than the good folks that raised them, are finding very few friends in the auction without a noticeable discount. But it's nearing the seasonal October market, when bawling calves are fairly plentiful and buyers normally run backwards anticipating the wide temperature swings leading to expensive health problems, usually until after the first hard frost. The supply consisted of 55% steers and 45% heifers, with nearly 48% over 600 pounds.
