Wyobraska cattle sales report

The combined sales volume of Wyoming, western Nebraska, western North and South Dakota feedlots for the week ending Sept. 19, totaled 9,050 head, compared to 12,950 head last week and 7,000 head last year, according to the USDA-Wyoming Department of Agriculture Market News, Torrington, Wyo.

Compared to last week, at Wyoming auctions, feeder steers and heifers over 650 pounds sold steady to $3 lower, under 600 pounds were not fully tested except light test in Riverton was steady to $2 higher. Demand was moderate to good. Direct trade was slow with comparable steer sales steady, and heifers steady to $2 lower. Demand was moderate. Buyer inquiry was light to moderate for moderate to heavy offerings. Some cattle coming off grass early due to grasshoppers eating up the pastures. Unless otherwise noted direct prices are current FOB with a 2 to 3% shrink or equivalent, and with a 5 to 10 cent slide on calves and 3 to 6 cent slide on yearlings from base weight. Steers made up approximately 62% of the total receipts, heifers 38%, with 86% offerings over 600 pounds totaled 86%. Direct sales accounted for 4,560 head of the total receipts.
