Newell sheep sales report

St. Onge Livestock Co., Ltd., Newell, S.D., reported receipts of 10,204 head Sept. 17, compared to 2,862 head last week and 8,622 head last year, according to the USDA to South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, S.D.

This was the annual replacement ewe, ewe lamb, and feeder lamb sale. There was a good number of buyers and a large crowd on the seats. A trend to earlier sales not applicable due to the differences in receipts and buyer numbers. Buyer demand was good to very good early; weakening to moderate late in sale. Quality of lambs and replacement ewes good to very good as usual for this annual event. Receipts included about 53% feeder and ewe lambs, 28% replacement ewes, 14% slaughter ewes and the balance was miscellaneous sheep and goats.

Slaughter ewes: Good 2 to 3, 168 to 171 lbs., 31.50 to 33.50 ( 31.93). Good 3 to 4, 18 head, 188 lbs., 30.00. Utility 1 to 2, 135 to 158 lbs., 25.00 to 28.50 (27.96). Cull 1, 305 head, 135 lbs., 19.50.

Feeder lambs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 362 head, 53 lbs., 130.50 thin; 62 to 69 lbs., 114.00 to 126.00 (119.05); 73 to 77 lbs., 108.00 to 118.00 (115.77); 375 head, 79 lbs., 110.00 ewe lambs; 80 to 89 lbs., 101.00 to 111.00 (106.41); 19 head, 88 lbs., 102.00 buck lambs; 80 to 88 lbs., 110.00 to 120.00 (116.85 Ewe lambs; 91 to 99 lbs., 96.00 to 104.00 (98.89); 88 head, 93 lbs., 110.00 ewe lambs; 33 head, 95 lbs., 91.00 poor fleeces; 100 to 108 lbs., 92.50 to 93.50 (92.90); 49 head, 108 lbs., 103.00 ewe lambs; 113 to 118 lbs., 87.00 to 88.50 (87.56) fleshy; 120 head,123 lbs., 93.00; 13 head, 120 lbs., 87.00 fleshy.
