Virginia reports eighth case of Eastern equine encephalitis

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)--Another case of Eastern equine encephalitis has been confirmed in Virginia.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says the latest case was a male horse from New Kent County that became ill and was euthanized Sept. 7. The horse hadn't been vaccinated for the disease, which is generally transmitted by mosquitoes.

The statewide total of cases is now eight. State Veterinarian Richard Wilkes says all the horses that tested positive for the disease either hadn't been vaccinated or hadn't been vaccinated recently.

Most of the cases were reported in the Tidewater area.
