Nutrient management specialist hired at UNL center

Starting Sept. 1, Tim Shaver became nutrient management specialist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln West Central Research and Extension Center.

Attracted to UNL by the continuing research emphasis on cropping with limited water, Shaver said he wants to be part of that research. Water's importance will continue to grow in importance in coming decades across the United States and the world, he said.

Shaver will begin by making himself familiar with research that is already in progress at the research and extension center. He will look specifically for ways to supplement and complement that research by bringing fertility issues into the projects that are currently ongoing.

In order to develop a nutrient management research program, Shaver will spend some time determining the needs of producers in West Central Nebraska so he can center his research on those needs.

Shaver comes to UNL from Colorado State University at Fort Collins where he served as a research associate while he worked on his Ph.D. Since the climate in eastern Colorado is similar to that of West Central Nebraska, he expects his experience there will translate well to his new position. In Colorado, he was involved in limited water and fertility research under similar conditions to those in western Nebraska.

Shaver also earned his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from CSU.
