Oct. 8 to 10 International Ag Show to have numerous educational opportunitiesTexas The International Farm and Ranch Show to be held Oct. 8 to 10 at the Freeman Coliseum and surrounding grounds northeast of downtown San Antonio will have a variety of educational offerings for visitors, according to show coordinators. "This won't be your typical ag show," said Jeff Lynch of San Antonio International Ag Promotions, the organization presenting the show. "We'll have something for everyone--farmers, ranchers and small acreage landowners. It's not unusual for a rancher to grow some crops or for a farmer to run some cattle, so we're making sure we present products, information and educational opportunities that reflect the extent and variety of today's agriculture." Lynch said the show also would provide educational opportunities for spouses and individuals seeking continuing education credits or units. Several private applicator credits will be available, he said, as well as Beef Quality Assurance credits and Certified Crop Advisor credits. However, Lynch added, a maximum of nine continuing education units will be available to any individual participant over the three-day show period. Two additional instructional sessions designed for spouses but open to all show attendees will be presented. An educational session on health and finance to be held on Oct. 8, and a session on modern advertisement and promotion for ranchers, including website design, will be held on Oct. 9. The show will be a tremendous educational opportunity for all participants, said Bryan Davis, Texas AgriLife Extension Service agent for natural resources in Bexar County, one of the show's educational program coordinators. Educational presentations over the three-day show period will address topics including: tillage and irrigation technologies; livestock fertility management; precision agriculture and global positioning system technology; solar/alternative energy; viticulture; new seed developments; alternative crops; biofuels; beef production; sheep and goat marketing; nature-based tourism; feral hog impact and control, horse management, wine-grape growing in the Texas Hill Country and wildlife management. Issues and author of The Truth about Organic Foods, is slated to address the future of farming and food production.
