Center for Grassland Studies schedules fall seminar series

Nebraska

The 15th annual fall seminar series offered by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Center for Grassland Studies will feature faculty and guest lecturers on topics ranging from invasive species to management of native grasslands and turfs.

The seminars, free and open to the public, are held most Mondays during the fall semester from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Nebraska East Union (see kiosks for location).

The series features Terry Riley, this year's Leu distinguished lecturer and former vice president of policy for the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership. On Sept. 21 he will present "Restoring Great Plains Grassland Landscapes" in the Hardin Hall auditorium (the only seminar not in the union).

--Oct. 5: Dale Lindgren, professor, West Central Research & Extension Center, UNL, "Selection of Native and Drought-tolerant Plants for Ornamental Use"

--Oct. 12: Heidi Hillhouse, post-doctoral research associate, Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, UNL, "Patterns of Plant Establishment in Tallgrass Prairie Plantings"

--Oct. 19: No seminar (semester break)

--Oct. 26: Dave Stock, owner, Stock Seed Farms, "Seed Production of Native Grasses"

--Nov. 2: No seminar

--Nov. 9: Karie Decker, coordinator, Invasive Species Project at the Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit based at UNL, "Nebraska Invasive Species Project: Monitoring, Mapping, Risk and Management"

--Nov. 16: Mitchell Stamm, graduate student, Department of Entomology, UNL, "Differential Responses of Western Chinch Bugs to Neonicetinyl Insecticides"

--Nov. 23: Anh Hoang, graduate student, Department of Entomology, UNL, "Role of Peroxidase in the Defense Response of Buffalograss to the Western Chinch Bug"

--Nov. 30: Sabrina Russo, assistant professor, School of Biological Sciences, UNL, "Functional and Demographic Tradeoffs Among Tree Species"

--Dec. 7: Tala Awada, associate professor, School of Natural Resources, UNL, "Eastern Red Cedar: Ecophysiology and Ramifications of Its Invasion on Ecosystem Processes in Nebraska"
