Hay trade slow

In Kansas, the hay trade is slow. Demand is moderate for dairy and stock cow alfalfa, alfalfa pellets, grinding alfalfa and grass hay, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Sept. 29. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Southwest:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady. Movement slow. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $190-$250; premium dairy, $115-$125, a little $130; good, $100-$115. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $85-$95. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, $105-$130, ground on truck, $95-$110. For the week ending Sept. 26 12,854 tons grinding alfalfa and 1,454 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Good bermuda, in large squares, $125, some $150 delivered, in small squares, $210 delivered. PM6 good, in small squares, $150. BMR Sudan, good, in large rounds, $60. Good straw, in large bales, $37.50-$55.

South central:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa and alfalfa pellets steady. Movement is slow to moderate. Horse alfalfa, in medium squares, $195; Dairy, 65-85 cents/point RFV, premium/supreme, $120-$140, an instance $150; premium, $110-$130; Stock cow, in medium squares or large rounds, not tested, $90-$110. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $65-$80, mostly $70. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots, $100-$120. For the week ending Sept. 26, 4,223 tons of grinding alfalfa and 710 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $140-$160; sun-cured, 17% $159-$160; dehydrated, 17% $205.

Southeast:

Alfalfa, brome and prairie hay steady. Movement slow. Horse and goat alfalfa, in medium squares, $140-$200. Premium dairy alfalfa, $135; good, $100-

$127.50; Stock cow, in medium squares, no test, $90-$120; Good bluestem, in small squares, $85-$100, mostly $90-$95, in medium and large squares, $60-$90, mostly $75-$80, in large rounds, $40-$60. Mulch, in large rounds , $45-$50. Good brome, in small squares, $100-$110, in medium and large squares, $80-$90, in large rounds, $50-$70.

Northwest:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady. Movement slow. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $200-$250. Good/premium dairy, $105; Stock cow, $80-$100. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $70-$90; Ground and delivered to feedlots and dairies, $100-$130.

North central/northeast:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa, prairie hay and brome steady. Movement slow to moderate. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $220, in medium squares, $130-$200; supreme dairy, $130-$140; premium, $120-$130; Stock cow, in medium squares, no test $90-$110; Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $60-$75, alfalfa ground on truck, $80-$95, ground and delivered, $90-$110. Good bluestem grass hay, in small squares, $90-$100, in medium squares, $70-$80, in large rounds, $45-$60. Good brome, in small squares, $4-$4.50/bale, $90-$120, in medium squares, $75-$85, in large rounds, $12-$30/bale, $50-$60; fair, $40-$50. Grass mulch, in large rounds, $45-$60. Straw, in small squares, $3-$3.50/bale, in medium and large bales, $45-$60.
