63rd Annual National Barrow Show sets recordsTop teams in the 63rd annual National Barrow Show Swine Judging Contest held Sept. 14 in Austin, Minn., were Western Illinois University of Macomb in the senior college division; Lake Land College, Mattoon, Ill., in the junior college division; and Tri-Point FFA #1, Cullom, IL in the junior division. The winning team in each of the three levels of judging competition was awarded according to points accumulated in the contest. This year's contest attracted 83 teams and 452 participants. Senior College Division Western Illinois University won first place in the senior college division with a score of 2997 points out of a possible 3250 points. The WIU team competed against an all-time high 17 other teams in the university division. Members of this team, coached by Mark Hoge, included Kyle Beutke, Amy Draznin, Garret Helregel, Jared Boyert, Kyle Pullen, Davey Robinson, and Doug Nelson. University of Missouri, Columbia, was second in the senior college division with a score of 2976 points. Coached by Chip Kemp, this team was comprised of Mindy Briscoe, Chris Perry, Neal Martin, Lindsey Hicks, Lance Martin, and Rebecca Lewis. Texas A&M University of College Station, coached by Zach Rambo and Blake Bloomberg came in third with a score of 2967. Texas Tech University, Lubbock, finished fourth with 2954 and West Texas A&M University, Wildorado, was fifth with a score of 2952. Additional team placings in the senior college division were: Sixth--Iowa State University, Ames, 2945; Seventh--Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, 2927; Eighth--South Dakota State University in Brookings, also with a score of 2927; Ninth--Colorado State University, Fort Collins, 2920; and Tenth--University of Nebraska, Lincoln, 2917. Corey Fischbacher, West Texas A&M University, was the top individual of 129 competing in the university division with 610 points out of a possible 650. In second place representing Western Illinois University was Kyle Beutke with 606 points. Shellie Intermill, University of Nebraska, picked up third, also with a score of 606. WIU contestant Amy Draznin finished fourth with a score of 605 and Drew Schmidt, Texas Tech University was fifth at 603. Ties were broken on higher Total Reasons Score. Senior college reasons awards were given to the top team and top five individuals. The Texas A&M University squad captured first with 927 points. The high individual in reasons was Cody Schminke, Iowa State University, with a score of 192 of 200 possible. With a score of 190 from Oklahoma State University, Zac Butler placed second. In third with 189 was Mindy Briscoe, University of Missouri. Fourth and fifth with scores of 188 were Jacob Lange, Tarleton State University and Amy Draznin, WIU. The ties were broken based on lower placing totals for reasons classes. Junior College Division Lake Land College took home top honors out of a record 16 teams in the junior college division with a score of 3011 points out of a possible 3250 points. Coached by Jon Althaus, team members were Kolton Smith, Lee Rincker, Miles Toenyes, Tegan Simmons, Maria Crandell, Ryan Smoes, and Michael Finley. Black Hawk East College, Kewanee, Ill., finished second with a score of 2981. Black Hawk is coached by Dan Hoge and Brian Arnold and their team consisted of Brant Smith, Cole Danner, Alyssa Smith, Kyle Dice, Jill Johnson, Colby Taber, and Courtney Smith. Blinn College, Brenham, Texas, coached by Brant Poe and Brice Mund was third at 2970. Eastern Oklahoma State College, Wilburton, Okla., was fourth with a score of 2952 and Coffeyville Community College, Coffeyville, Kan., was fifth with 2895. Additional team placings in the junior college division were: Sixth--Casper College, Casper, Wyo., 2890; Seventh--Joliet Junior College, Joliet, Ill., 2883; Eighth--Lincoln Land Community College, Springfield, Ill., 2861; Ninth--Fort Scott Community College, Fort Scott, Kan., 2842; and Tenth--Northeastern Junior College, Sterling, Colo., 2842. The top individual of 117 contestants in the junior college division was Kolton Smith, Lake Land College, with a total of 620 out of a possible 650 points. Also from Lake Land in second was Lee Rincker a score of 615. Blinn College teammates Meg Drake and Kody Lucherk finished third and fourth with totals of 613 and 609. Brant Smith, Black Hawk East, wrapped up fifth with a score of 605. Black Hawk East had the high team reasons score of 928 points. Miles Toenyes, Lake Land College secured high individual honors in reasons with a score of 193. Lincoln Land CC's Blake Lehman landed second with 191 and Black Hawk East's Brant Smith third with 190. With scores of 189, Marty Gifford, Casper College, was fourth and Colton Downing, Eastern Oklahoma State College was fifth. Junior Division Tri-Point FFA #1 coached by Diana Loschen captured top honors in the junior division of the 63rd annual NBS® Swine Judging Contest this year. There were 49 teams in the Junior Division from ten states which included Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Georgia, Oklahoma, Indiana, Nebraska, Kansas, Wisconsin, and Missouri. The Tri-Point FFA team members Naomi Cooper, Tyler Loschen, Edward, Ehrhardt, and Kaleb Nelson accumulated 942 of a possible 975 points.
