Cooperative marketing and controlling production costs focus of upcoming workshop

Cooperative marketing groups can be beneficial to producers, but members need to understand the benefits and limitations of cooperatives before deciding if this is the best route for them. The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, along with the Southern Region Risk Management Education Center and CSREES, is presenting a seminar focused on utilizing cooperative marketing groups as well as controlling costs. The seminar is Oct. 28, at the Farm Credit Services of Western Arkansas in Russellville, Ark.

Dr. Les Anderson with the University of Kentucky will discuss the benefits of cooperative marketing groups. Some of these benefits include obtaining economies of scale, entering new markets, accessing professional services, maintaining more of the retail dollar, increasing bargaining power and preserving existing markets. These can all benefit an operation by increased profits and efficiency.

In addition to learning about the benefits of cooperative marketing groups, controlling production costs will also be discussed. Beef cattle production makes quite an impact in the state with approximately 30,000 farms producing beef cattle, and a total economic impact of more than $1.4 billion. To help producers control costs while still managing productive and efficient operations, Dr. Damona Doye with Oklahoma State University will offer advice on controlling production costs.
