Weather hinders harvest in some areasWyoming During the week ending Oct. 18, a localized area has experienced a hard freeze which has damaged the sugarbeet crop, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Wyoming Field Office, Oct. 19. Sugarbeet harvest in some areas was stopped due to snow. Producers were waiting for corn to dry prior to harvesting. Livestock operators were moving cattle to sale barns and feedlots. High temperatures ranged from high 50s to high 70s. Low temperatures ranged from 5 to 32 degrees. Topsoil moisture was at 89 percent adequate or better, up 14 points from last year and up 37 points from the average. There were 4.4 days suitable for field work last week. Ninety-five percent of the dry beans had been windrowed, and 83 percent combined; 11 points above 2008 and 2 points above the 5-year average. Ninety-five percent of corn was in the dent stage, 91 percent was mature, and 7 percent was harvested; up 4 points from last year but 9 points below the average. Almost a third of sugarbeets have been harvested at 32 percent, 9 points above 2008 but 4 points below the average. Eighty-six percent of alfalfa has been cut for the third time, up 21 points from last year and up 4 points from the average. Range and pasture conditions were at 51 percent good or better, up 7 points from last year and up 22 points from the 5-year average. Livestock conditions were reported at 93 percent good or better. Seventy percent of cattle and 71 percent of sheep were moved from summer pastures. Hay and roughage supplies were at 93 percent good or better.
